Note
In August 2022 we made a presentation at the annual congress of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA) in the United States under the title "Past, present and future challenges of beef production in the Río de la Plata Grasslands". The relative stability shown in the long term by the cattle stock in the region suggests a hypothesis of equilibrium in the net flow of methane. Simultaneously with the emission of a certain amount of methane by cattle, another amount is being transformed into CO2. The CH4 emitted does not come from fossil sources but from CO2 already present in the atmosphere. It is part of the cycle of biogenic carbon captured by plants and then consumed by ruminants. If this hypothesis is verified, the cattle ranchers from the Río de la Plata grasslands would prove their innocence against the accusations of contributing to the destruction of the planet.
