Note
This article presents the results of an economic simulation model of a sprinkler irrigation system for a rice-soybean-pasture/livestock rotation on a commercial scale. From the results, some conclusions can be highlighted: 1) investment in sprinkler irrigation systems for a rotation of this type (rice-soybean/pasture), on hilly soils, is profitable for the range of scenarios proposed, with high certainty of obtaining margins higher than 400 USD/ha; 2) rice contributes a good part of the income of the rotation due to the good productive results, but mainly due to the high stability of these through the years, especially if it reaches prices like those of the last harvest; 3) soybean is potentially capable of providing very good income, although both its production levels and the marketing price show a very high variability, strongly raising the uncertainty of its economic result; 4) the cattle ranch incorporates a remarkable and very safe extra income, taking advantage of the cover crop between summer crops; 5) the integration of various items in an irrigation system such as the one proposed, ensures a basket of income that makes it very stable and resilient to variations in prices, climate and yields; 6) the comparison with a base system (without project) would allow establishing the incremental profitability of the investment in the irrigation system.
