Abstract

Excerpts from the Introduction: In September 2013, School Food FOCUS (FOCUS) partnered with the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) on a cooperative agreement to enhance the regional produce procurement capacity of Detroit Public Schools (DPS). The goals of the project were to create benefits to producers through new market opportunities and to schoolchildren through increased access to healthy fresh foods. As designed, the activities of the project were to: ● outline the channels by which DPS procures regional produce, using mapping and supply chain visualization as a tool to better understand DPS produce–supply chains; ● determine the amount of regional produce procured by the district in SY 2012-13 and SY 2013-14; ● identify new potential suppliers of regional produce and establish or strengthen the necessary aggregation, processing, and distribution links to move this regional produce into Detroit schools; and ● investigate methods by which product information is transmitted through produce supply chains and identify opportunities to improve DPS’ capability to report on the type and volume of its regional purchasing.
