Abstract

Reducing food insecurity is necessary for the security, the diversification and the increase of agricultural production. Specifically, the increase in rice production can not be done without the use of improved technologies suitable for socio-economic realities. This study aims to assess the impact of the use of improved rice production methods on poverty status in the rice cluster Glazoué in Benin, using the MTE approach. The study areas are the districts of Dassa, Glazoué, Ouinhi and Savalou which constitutes the development pole, with a sample of 380 producers. Primary data used come from the baseline survey of investigation in development poles in the rice sector in Benin, conducted by AfricaRice and the National Institute of Agricultural Research of Benin (INRAB) in 2012. The results showed that the use of reduced 3 rice production methods improved the intensity of poverty from 18% in the subpopulation of potential users. In the under non-user population, the impact is 16% and is statistically significant with a threshold of 5%. In the subpopulation of real users of improved rice production methods, the impact is 20%. When considering the severity of poverty, the results show that the use of improved methods of rice production reduced the severity of poverty by 12% in the subpopulation of potential users of these methods. These methods can be used as an effective instrument in the fight against food insecurity and poverty.
