Abstract

This paper presents a set of long-term productivity growth scenarios for the rice sector of the the Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS), a union of 15 West African countries. The region aims to be self-sufficient in rice by 2020 and in undertaking considerable investments aimed at improving yields. This research used the USDA Baseline Model for ECOWAS to analyze the impacts of an expansion of irrigation and increased use of fertilizer. Results suggest a boost in domestic production at lower prices, but continuing dependence on imports to satisfy consumer demand.
