Abstract

There are relatively few Federal environmental regulations that influence agricultural production in the United States. However, many local and state environmental rules may influence the management practices on U.S. farms, which might affect costs of production and adoption of best management practices. Detailed analysis of corn farms yields insight into these relationships and suggests that stringent environmental regulations could increase the likelihood of adoption of certain conservation practices, all else equal, but not costs per unit of production.
