Abstract

------------------------------------------------------------------- In our study we are summarising our research on the time and location related processes of the increasingly popular index called the ecological footprint. Our aim is to present a snapshot that shows both the timeline of countries’ path and the location they got to. The „path” is going to be presented on a temporal scale starting from the 1960’s, according to which not every country is characterized by the growth of their ecological footprint and the decrease of biological capacity (NICOLUCCI et. al. 2012), but countries can be classifiedinto four groups based on their ecological footprint, biocapacity, ecological deficit and other indices. The „present situation” is based on the of GFN database, that classifies countries into three clusters based on their ecological footprint, and biological capacity. If we compare these clusters with the findings of the temporal analysis, we can see how countries have reached their present situation. This is crucial because both the ecological footprint and the ecological deficit indices show data for one specific point in time, but comparing these with the past tendencies we can see how different paths of economic growth lead to different results, and what can be the local strategical aims for reaching maintainable growth in a given country.
