Senalanda el papel relevante que adoptan las Comunidades de Regantes en la gestion de las aguas subterranieas, se pretende realizar una aportacion al estudio del papel de las instituciones rurales tradicionales en la gestion sostenible de los recursos naturales. The present work asks about the modalities of utilization of basic resources, and particularly water, in different logics of social organization of the agro-food production. We tackle the idea of the limits in the use of water resource in the framework of different social regulations: traditional irrigated land and new highly productive irrigated agriculture. In the first case, there are traditional stakeholders among which we highlighted the "Irrigation Communities". The second model is characterized by the presence of highly capitalized and technologic companies with a high capacity of insertion of their products in competitive markets. In this work we study the role of traditional rural institutions in the sustainable management of natural resources, by emphasizing the role of "Irrigation Communities" in the management of groundwater. The area of research is localized in the northeast of the Region of Murcia (southeast of Spain). This is an areas of Mediterranean medium mountains with an important forest vocation and with natural and cultural landscapes of great ecological interest. Field work was realized in the municipality of Caravaca de La Cruz, where there is an important agrarian activity with traditional irrigated land and dry lands. Since the last decades, in this areas there is an important expansion of new irrigated land, and recently, an important urban-tourism development. Our research approach tries to obtain from local stakeholders their discourses and their representations of the degradation of natural resources just as the perceive it in their daily practices.
