En la situación actual, el tomate canario atraviesa serias dificultades respecto de su rentabilidad en el mercado europeo. Esta investigación trata de los cambios y de la evolución que se ha producido en este sector tras la incorporación a la UE, y pretende esbozar los posibles escenarios a los que puede enfrentarse en un futuro muy próximo. Las ventajas comparativas del tomate canario (calidad, mejores infraestructuras, condiciones climáticas) no aparecen optimizadas ante sus inmediatos competidores, particularmente Marruecos. La necesidad de superar la importante deuda del sector (por la inversión en infraestructura) y su déficit (por los problemas de competitividad en los mercados) hacen que las perspectivas sean muy difíciles; pero la inserción definitiva en los mercados comunitarios, el aumento de los fondos estructurales (y su mejor gestión) y, por último, una adecuada política proteccionista desde la PAC, pueden ser un instrumento adecuado para abortar cualquier competencia que se fundamente en el dumping social...Nowadays the tomato from the Canaries is having important difficulties regarding its profitability within the European market. This investigation deals with the changes and the evolution have taken place in this sector after joining the European Union, and its aim is to outline the possible stages the tomato could face in a very near future. The comparative advantages in the tomato from the Canaries (quality, better infrastructures, climate) are not optimised with its near competitors, particularly Morocco. The need to overcome the important debt in the sector (due to investment in infrastructures) and its deficit (because of competitiveness in the market) make the perspectives to be very difficult; but the definite integration in the community markets, the increase of structural funds (and its better management), and, finally, an adequate protectionist politics from the Politic Agriculture Community (PAC), can be a good instrument to abort any competence based on social dumping.
