Abstract
The land-grant university system
was established as an institutional
mechanism to influence and control the
agenda of scientists within a revolutionary
system of higher education. It was
explicitly anti -elitist-an experiment in
democracy-as compared to the dominant
British and European models of the
late 19th and early 20th centuries. The
land-grants were to be better than Harvard
and Yale under the values of democratic
America- they now may be just
as bad.
